The Art of Pleating: An AV���� Paris Fashion Student Experience

A Class Focused on Draping and Pleating

As part of their curriculum, AV���� Paris students took part in a module entirely dedicated to creating a pleated skirt, a key step in learning sewing and patternmaking techniques. This class, intended for students already familiar with flat pattern drafting, aimed to explore draping, a sculptural technique that uses the mannequin as a support.

“The goal was to respect volumes and design while allowing the students to start developing their own style in draping,” explains their instructor.

Before even starting the pleating process, students prepared their fabric by marking essential lines: center front, center back, waist, and hips. These reference points ensured accurate proportions and grainline throughout

 

A Practical and Personalized Teaching Approach

To guide the students, the instructor alternated between technical demonstrations and one-on-one assistance, helping the students master the fundamentals of draping. Each step, from fabric preparation to pleat manipulation, was designed to allow room for creativity.

The main challenge was aligning the side seams while maintaining harmonious pleats. “This stage required a lot of precision. I worked closely with each student to find the best solution for their creation,” the instructor points out. It was a way to show that even in the technical aspects, each piece remains unique and personal.

An Intensive Learning Experience

Over four weeks, with seven hours of instruction each week, the students thoroughly explored the pleating technique. Their initial experience was met with enthusiasm, as the instructor noted: “The students really enjoyed the challenge and showed a lot of enthusiasm for this new technique” .

Following this module, the curriculum then transitionned to flat pattern drafting classes, focusing on the construction of a classic shirt. In the second semester, students will return to draping with a dress project, allowing them to further hone their skills.
